Position Statement on Genetic Engineering & EMS

Marylin Faith Rumph

"I believe that GE (genetic engineering) is the main factor or cause in the development of the disease we call Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS). If there had been no toxin(s) of an unusual type capable of causing a new disease, which needed to be filtered out, then the reductions in the filtering process at the Showa Denko plant would have been of little consequence. However, since one or more toxins capable of creating a new disease existed due to GE used by Showa Denko K.K. in the manufacturing of L-Tryptophan, filtering did not remove the causative toxin or toxins or else filtering did not remove them enough to prevent several thousand persons from getting EMS. If there had been no GE'd tryptophan, I maintain there would have been no EMS, with or without the filtration cutbacks. GE was the critical change in causing the novel disease we call EMS. Nothing else makes any sense. GE may have appropriate uses, but it went wrong in this case. Moreover, the manufacturer did not report the fact they were using GE to the FDA. I don't even like to use the term GM (genetically modified), as in GM foods, because I view that as an attempt to make GE more palatable for the masses." - M.F.Rumph
